Strengthening Civil Society

Civil Society

In the development context strengthening civil society refers to two different aspects: the institutional capacity-building of NGOs and community-based organisations and empowerment of civil actors to raise their voices and organise themselves. The first aspect involves knowledge exchange emphasising transparency, accountability and technical and methodological skills related to development work. The second aspect deals rather with the stakeholders - particularly poor and marginalized populations - through assists them in expressing their views as well as to ensure that those views are factored into policy and project decisions.

My expertise in strengthening civil society

Having worked both as an employee and volunteer in several NGOs and been responsible for the assistance in the capacity-building of several southern NGOs, I have gained insight into the workings and needs of NGOs in general. In addition, I have worked at the grassroots level in different countries which taught me a lot about the challenges of giving voice to the stakeholders, the long-term commitment that is required for this form of empowerment and about the different methods of participation.
